Online-only relationships are complicated and strange.
A long time ago, I was in an online-only romantic relationship. It was confusing and heartbreaking. I do think the relationship was real, at least the emotional aspect of it. I never met the guy in person and I think that’s why it failed. The physical part of it is huge. I couldn't make that connection and as soon as I realized that, I knew it would never work out. I think if a couple has that emotional and physical connection to sustain a long-distance, online relationship, they could make it work. It takes some real commitment and dedication and trust to keep a relationship going.
But there are other ways of defining relationship. I find that friendships are another type of relationship. Online friendships are also immensely complicated. I have made many friends online over the years. Many of them have fallen away over the years, but I still have a few that I count as my very close friends. Those friends are some of the greatest people I've ever known. I've met people from across the state, across the country and across the world. Again, it takes an incredible amount of trust to hold together a friendship that can span hundreds of miles. The friends I have now, I know will be around for a long time because I trust them completely. I've had the most honest, random and heartfelt conversations with them and they've made me a better person.
One of these friends, a girl named Bronwen, I met on Tumblr. We were both going to the same concert a few years ago. We started talking about our love for the artist and we became close quickly. We ended up meeting briefly at the concert and we've kept talking ever since. Last summer, I went to visit her in Madison and we spent a good four hours just sitting and talking. We've seen each other through some really tough times and really good times as well. She sent me a Valentine in the mail, just this week. She’s one of my best friends and I won’t let her slip away, like friends in the past, or friends from high school. The bond we have started online, and it will last for life.
